Nov 1, 2022 - The San Carlos School District is excited to share that Tierra Linda’s Assistant Principal, Charu Gulati, will be setting sail to the Galapagos Islands for an expedition under the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. She will leave on a two-week expedition starting November 10th.
Charu is one of 50 educators from the United States & Canada who was selected for the 2020 fellowship program, and the expedition cohort is finally ready to set sail after two years of pandemic delays. She will travel aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II, a Lindblad Expeditions ship. In addition to the educators, the expedition team consists of naturalists, scientists, explorers, and National Geographic photographers. An annual competitive application process for pre-K - Grade 12 educators is used to select educators and host them aboard Lindblad Expeditions voyages for a life changing, field-based experience.
“Being a biology student myself and a long-time educator of science, Charles Darwin has been an integral part of my scientific knowledge. Having the opportunity to visit Darwin’s living laboratory, one of the most unique landscapes on earth, will be a lifetime dream fulfilled,” says Gulati. She has been reaching out to different classrooms throughout the district to share her learning experiences. “I would love student inquiry to guide my exploration of the Galapagos, and am excitedly looking forward to livestreaming and interacting with classrooms while onboard the ship. Sharing my field-based experiences with students will help them see me as a risk-taker, a lifelong learner, and an explorer- three essential qualities I hope to instill in our students.”
Superintendent Jennifer Frentress expressed, “SCSD is so proud that Charu Gulati was selected for this opportunity. When she returns, she will take on a two-year leadership commitment to support National Geographic’s education initiatives. We are very excited about how this will benefit our San Carlos learners.”
Charu is passionate about STEM opportunities for all students. She is especially focusing on ‘Why girls need STEM and why STEM needs girls.’ With this expedition, she hopes to role model the boundless possibilities that lie ahead for our girls. Gaining experience with naturalists and scientists on the expedition will consequently allow her to share the true power of science through immersive storytelling to foster a sense of responsibility and commitment to take care of our planet.
