Weekly New for October 25th

Principal's News

ADVISORY meets every Thursday: The focus of our advisory time revolves around the big idea, Who am I and who do I want to be?. To kick off the year, we have  spent  time exploring ‘Self Identity’ to celebrate the individuality and differences within our community. Students also had the opportunity to watch some inspirational TEDx talks to think about their story and reflect upon:

  • What is your story?
  • What is the story you tell yourself?
  • What is the story you tell the world?

We are also doing a school wide read along as a part of our advisory curriculum. We are currently reading The Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. Ask your child to tell you a bit more about Aven (the main character of the story).

Halloween Guidelines

At TL Halloween is about school spirit and unity.

The Halloween tradition can bring back many memories from childhood. While themes change, the fun and creativity around making costumes remains constant. Often, it's groups of people who have been marginalized that become the genesis for costumes.

Our goal is to celebrate Halloween in a way that feels respectful for all, please follow this central guideline:

  • Full face covering masks and weapons are not permitted at TL during the school day
  • Avoid costumes that portray blood and gore
  • Real cultures are not costumes, so best to avoid.
  • It opens the door to cultural appropriation, missteps, and hurt feelings, and that isn't what Halloween's about.
  • Choose from the many fictitious characters, animals, occupations, sports, space figures, and heroes.
  • Avoid using culture-specific traditional garments and never apply makeup that changes skin tone to that of another person's race.

The purpose of these guidelines is not to create a list of "don'ts," but rather to encourage kids to dress in a culturally responsible way that allows everyone to have a good time and feel respected. Parents and guardians can help their children understand the "why" along with making good choices and having a frightfully good time on Halloween.

Guidance provided by DEI consultant, Anthony Witte - Witte’s End Consulting
