Principal's News

Dear TL Families:
Some exciting and important events are coming up this week:
  • June 8 and 9 8th grade "Drive Thru", pick up, pass back and good bye.  Please check your email for time window and contact Cori Carpenter if you need assistance or cannot attend.
  • June 10 pre-recorded Virtual Promotion Ceremony posted at 3:00 p.m.  We will send the link and information soon.  Video is till in production
  • School office is open from 9:00 - 12:00 p.m. to pick up and pass back items.  Please return chrome books this week
  • The yearbook printing plant was shut down in March and April due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It has opened back up, but we have no idea when the yearbooks will be shipped.  It could be as late as August 1st.  As soon as they arrive, we will move forward with a distribution plan.  We will also announce if there are any extra yearbooks for purchase at that time.  Thank you for your patience.
Reflections and Planning
We are all reflecting on the last trimester of school and looking forward to what the summer and fall will look like.  We are engaging students to help us reflect and understand what worked and what needs to change.  We are looking to students for ideas around opening our school buildings, health, hygiene and strengthening teaching and learning during distance learning.  I am also going to be working with teachers and staff over the next few weeks around these same topics.  We know that the San Mateo County Office of Education has adopted the four pillars:  health and hygiene, face coverings, physical distancing and limited gatherings as part of a pandemic recovery plan.  These will be at the core of our planning and serve to guide us as a school and district.  I will keep you updated throughout the summer months regarding our plans and progress.  In addition, be on the look out for a parent survey or more information.  We want to hear your thoughts and ideas.  We do currently have a Reopening School Taskforce that has met twice and will continue to meet a few more times.  There will also be planning committees with instructional leaders, teachers and staff in the month of June.
Summer Reading
We know this last trimester has been something none of us have experienced before and we hope you can find some creative ways to stay safe and enjoy your summer! In light of recent events, we have chosen two books for us all to read this summer. While you read them we have a bit of thinking work for you to do, so please take notes below. We will use them at the start of school next year, so be ready to discuss.
  • The two books to read for students going into 8th grade are: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley
  • The two books to read for students going into 7th grade are: Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes and Stand Up, Yumi Chung! by Jessica Kim
Your children have received a copy of this in their current English class Google Classroom.
Stay safe and healthy until we are together again,

Kristen Ugrin, Principal

Please join us for our last PTA meeting of the year!  We will be receiving the most up to date news from our Principals on developments with the plans for the Fall.  We will also be wrapping up PTA business and discussing how our programs & fundraising will be impacted for next year as we all adhere to health & social distancing mandates.  Please click HERE for the agenda.

With school wrapping up, we have one last, but very important request that will only require 5 minutes of your time.  As you might've already heard on the news, Gov Newsom has proposed a drastic 10% cut in LCFF school funding.  This translates to a $2.7MM cut to SCSD for next year.  This will be devastating for our district as it is on top of the $3MM in cuts we have already suffered due to lost revenue from Covid-19 impact.

Good news is there is an alternative budget proposed that preserves funding for K-12 education.  We need your help to advocate for this alternate budget by emailing our representatives.    Lawmakers will approve an operating budget by June 15th so it is urgent to email them now to ensure our voices are heard.

Please click HERE for more info on how you can easily do this.   Also please help us spread the word to others in the community.

Many thanks to everybody who participated in the PTA Coordinating Council gift card drive in mid-March to support our SCSD families.  It has been a huge success and we have handed out all of the donated gift cards to approximately 50 district families in need!

We also secured generous grants from the Rotary Club and the Community Foundation of San Carlos, allowing us to shift to grocery delivery services for our families.  We will be offering the program through the summer (or until funds are depleted) to continue to support our families that are still navigating COVID-related challenges.

Our recipient families have been overwhelmed by the compassion of our  community.   Kudos for truly making a difference in their lives through your kindness and generosity.

Each year, the TLM PTA honors individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of volunteering. The recipients of the 2019-2020 Honorary Service Awards are:

Hazel Stabinsky

Carrie Fromm

Mona Maher

Sara Murphy

Amy Nguyen

Molly Nguyen

Lagille Rodriguez

Gina Wintermark

Cindy Young

These individuals have contributed to a specific program that benefited our school, the PTA overall, as well as community programs. They exemplify outstanding service and commitment to Tierra Linda and Mariposa schools. These individuals have each spent countless hours making both TL and Mariposa a wonderful and special place for our children.

In the past, we have recognized our award recipients at the spring band concert. Unfortunately, we were unable to do that this year but hope to celebrate them during the next band concert.

We thank them all for their above and beyond service!

Though we can't have our annual TL Mariposa book fair at our library, we are hosting an online Scholastic Book Fair all summer long starting now!  From now through Sept 4th, you can click HERE to shop and support our school library while discovering favorite characters, series, and collections all summer long.

Orders are delivered right to your doorstep and you can take advantage of FREE shipping on book-only purchases over $25.  Be sure to stock up for a summer of reading!

San Carlos Education Foundation SCEFSCEF

You did it! We asked for your help to “Make it Happen in May” and SCEF could not be more thrilled to report that the $2.8 million goal has been reached! Thanks to our generous donors and sponsors who have shown us once again the power of our community to make a difference. In these unprecedented times with looming budget challenges, SCEF is committed to continuing it’s fundraising efforts. The anticipated reductions in California State Funding will be deeply and swiftly felt without the financial support of our community.

Any donation received before June 30th will be used in the 2020-21 school year. SCEF works to ensure that we do not fail our kids. If we all do our part as a community, and give what we can, all of our children can continue to thrive with a solid public education.
Every donation will make a difference in the lives of our students.

Let’s see how far we can go together. Please donate TODAY at https://www.scefkids.org/donate/.
